Story by Benjamin
Franklin
When
I was a child[1], seven years old,
my friends[2] one day filled my pocket[3] with coppers[4]. I immediately set out for a toy –shop[5], and on th way. I came across a boy[6] playing a whistle[7]
he had just bought there. I was so
charmed with the sound[8] that came
from his intrument[9] that I offered
the boy all the money[10] I had in
exchange for it.
When
I returned home[11], I went whistling all over the house[12] very pleased with myself, but disturbing all the family[13]. My brother[14] and sister[15],
who understood what a bad[16] bargin
I had made, told me I had given four times more for the whistle[17] than it was worth. This upset[18] me, as I began to think of all the other good things I
might have bought with the rest of the money[19].
I was laughed at so much for my folly[20]
that I cried from vexation[21] and
the thought of my stupidity[22]
caused me more chargin than the whistle[23]
gave me pleasure[24].
This
lesson[25] however as useful later
in life[26]. For it had left a
lasting impression[27] on my mind[28]. Often therefore, when tempted
to buy some useless trifle. I checked my impulse[29]
with the word : “Don`t give too much for
the whistle[30]” and so I saved
my money[31]. As i grow older man[32] and mixed with the world[33], observing the ways of men[34], I thought I met with many,
very many who were giving too much for
their whistles[35].
When
I saw ambitious people[36] striving
for favour at court[37], wasting their
time at levees[38], their rest,
their freedom[39], their virtue[40], even their friends[41], in order to obtain their
ends, I said to myself : “These are
giving too much for their whistle[42]”.
When I beheld others over-fond of popularity[43],
always mixed up in political intrigues, neglecting their own affairs and
bringing themselves to ruin : “They pay
indeed too much”, thought I, “For
their whistles[44]”.
If
I chanced upon a miser, giving up every kind of personal comfort, all the joy[45] of helping others, the esteem
of his follow-men and the pleasures of friendship, for the sake of amassing
wealth : “Poor man”, I would say, “You
are indeed paying too much for your whistle[46]”.
On meeting a man[47] of the world
who sacrificed to gross bodily indulgence[48]
every opportunity of bettering his mind or his situation : “Unfortunate
one,” said I, “You are laying up a store[49]
of suffering[50] for yourself rather
than of pleasure[51], you are giving too much for your whistle[52]”.
If
I fell in with an individual[53]
overttached to fine clothes[54],
beautiful furniture, extravagant carriages[55]
and the like, all beyond his means and to acquire which he was running himself
into debt[56], and who might
possibly finish in jail[57] : “Alas”,
I pondere, “He is paying dearly, very
dearly, for his whistle[58].”
Should I hear of the case of a beautiful kind-hearted young woman[58] married to a bad tempered
boor of a husband[59] : “What a pity”, I reflected “that she has paid so much for her whistle[60].”
I
came, therefore to the conclusion[61]
that the greater part of mankind’s misery had been brouht about by the false[62] values they had put on
certain things and by giving too much for their whistles[63]. From this story[64]
I knew and I should take a conclusion[65]
“Don’t thing usseless for you livehood[66] and get back to your the
first direction[67]”.
